Deadly Amoebae: Hunting New Drugs Against Overlooked Parasites

Amoebae are some of the most mysterious microorganisms, distinct from viruses and bacteria, and capable of causing devastating diseases in humans. Yet despite their impact, these parasites have long been overlooked by medical research - current treatments are often ineffective and can carry severe side effects. Our research group is using cutting-edge drug discovery techniques to overcome these limitations. We focus on three species - E. histolytica, A. castellanii, and N. fowleri - each of which invades and harms the human body in unique ways.
Using Materials to Heal the Gut

What happens when the body’s own defence system turns against itself? This is the reality for millions living with inflammatory bowel disease, a chronic condition where the immune system attacks the gut. Symptoms vary widely, and the true cause remains unknown, leaving many patients cycling through treatments for life. My research explores a new approach to treatment using biomaterials - soft, jelly-like hydrogels designed to work with the gut’s natural barrier, mucus. We will explore why inflammatory diseases are rising and how new therapies could offer patients a better quality of life.
Natural medicines: the curious case of the caterpillar fungi

Worldwide, many people still rely on traditional medicines, and most approved medicines are derived from or inspired by active components from nature. Despite this, it is often difficult to find high quality evidence for the efficacy of traditional medicines. I will discuss my journey with the natural product cordycepin and its source, the fungus Cordyceps militaris (which infects caterpillars). My team has explored the therapeutic potential of this product and is collaborating with groups working to bring both the fungus and derivatives of cordycepin to the clinic.
