Join us to explore the cravings of the human body and mind and their effects upon each other, from a hunger for life to an appetite for destruction.  Find out about the relationships between diet and behaviour and between loss of control and heavy drinking, then go up in smoke to bust e-cigarette myths.  On the night, you'll also down Shots of Science, where scientists race to satisfy your greed for knowledge in two minutes or less!  Prepare for some mind-altering discussions.  Go on, you know you want to...

Say Why to Drugs: Busting e-cigarette Myths

Dr Suzi Gage (Lecturer in Psychology)
Former smokers have been turning to e-cigarettes in their thousands, with many reporting that switching to the devices has finally enabled them to quit. But the media is full of conflicting reports about them, and they’ve divided the academic community. I’ll discuss what we currently know about e-cigarettes, and what we’re currently investigating, including some of my own research. I’ll also attempt to bust some of the myths currently surrounding them.

Heavy Drinking & Loss of Control

Dr Andy Jones (Lecturer)
How many times have you intended to stay for 'just 1 or 2' & are still out 12 hours later, less a lot of money & even more dignity but with bruises and a kebab? The road to hell is paved with good intentions & we’ll explore the journey there by examining changes in our behavioural control over the course of the day & in response to specific events. I’ll discuss what we know about behavioural control in relation to addiction, what kind of events may cause short term changes in our control & whether we might be able to improve our behavioural control as a way of cutting down alcohol consumption

The Snake that Swallowed it's Tail - Diet & Behaviour and how they Interact

Keith Morgan (Lecturer)
Magdalena Muc (Post-Doctoral Research Associate - Medical Statistics)
We all know that what we eat is important, but did you know that diet and behaviour have an impact on each other? Join us to explore research which shows that supplementing diets in poor communities and in young offenders actually leads to a decrease in anti-social behaviour. How much would it cost us though to offer free supplements & how much might it save? We’ll also take a trip to Brazil, where evidence shows that the environment and how a person behaves actually influences what they eat. So come and find out why our diet matters more than you might think!
