One of the most vital roles of a modern zoo is to protect species on the verge of extinction, so why are many of the most common species seen in zoos the least threatened in the wild? From penguins to meerkats and zebras to giraffes, many familiar zoo species are not currently endangered but play a key role in conveying pro-environmental messages and inspiring people to make sustainable changes for the benefit of the planet. Through examination of conservation psychology and the science behind zoo education we will explore how perhaps the power of penguins can save the planet.

How are we preparing citizens and young people for tackling the climate and ecological crisis and making the transition to a sustainable economy and society? This talk discusses the current state of education for sustainability in England. I start by stressing the need for a public education campaign. I then consider the extent that education for sustainability has been integrated into primary, secondary and university education. In the final section, I outline the urgent policy changes needed to ensure that the education system prepares young people for the challenges ahead.
