On our ‘Air’ themed night, we will take you up into the skies to explore life above us. We will uncover mysteries of tiny life in the air we breathe, the wonders of the animals capable of flight, and how air we rely on is changing quicker than we could imagine.
Microbes that make and break gas
Terence McGenity
(Professor and Head of School of Life Sciences, University of Essex)
Microbes (and other organisms) make thousands of different gases. They can serve as stress protectants and signalling molecules, or simply be waste products. If they escape from the soil or sea to the atmosphere many of these gases can affect Earth’s climate. Other microbes can break down these gases, preventing them from entering the atmosphere, often using them to fuel their own growth. Some microbial gases are also harnessed by humans to make biofuels. This talk will investigate microbial smells, focussing on one the most abundantly produced gases, isoprene.
Share Our Shores: Protecting Our Beach-Nesting Birds.
Adam Nixon
(Coastal Ranger, Essex Wildlife Trust)
Across the UK little terns, oystercatchers and ringed plovers nest amongst the sand and shingle of our beaches, with many unaware of their existence. These birds are facing increasing pressures, from human disturbance to climate change, with populations rapidly decreasing. The Share Our Shores project aims to protect and raise awareness of our beach-nesting birds in Essex through practical conservation and public engagement. This talk will discuss the project, its challenges, findings over recent years, and the interventions we’re putting in place to hopefully see these birds thrive.
