Forget me not….The Science of dementia this evening will put the spotlight on the work undertaken by scientists here in Southampton who work to further our understanding of how the brain deteriorates during dementia and why we need to do more research to understand and treat this devastating disease.

Understanding Dementia

Kirsten Williamson (PhD Student )
Dementias, like Alzheimer’s Disease, effects our ability to think, make decisions and retrieve memories. But what happens inside our brains when dementia strikes: how do healthy brain cells work and what goes wrong during dementia?

Treating Dementia: are we ready yet?

Dr Diego Gomez-Nicola (Professor of Neuroimmunology)
Research into dementia is therefore of much interest and concern for society, and a hope to provide effective treatments to slow or halt the progression of the disease. However, for Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of Dementia, a multitude of promising treatments have failed to progress in the process of drug development, generating a very challenging landscape both for scientists and patients. Here we will discuss the challenges related to treating Dementia, the reasons behind clinical trial failure, and the hopes for success in the near future.
