Friends on tap

Professor Robin Dunbar (Professor of Evolutionary Psychology)
Friendship is probably the single most important determinant of our health, well-being and happiness. Nonetheless, our social world is very small scale, with the number of friends we can maintain limited by both our psychological capacity to manage friendships and the time we have available to invest in them. An obvious question has been whether online social networking allows us to cut through this glass ceiling and increase the size of our social world. I shall show that it doesn't, and explain why.
