From comic books about new technologies in rural India, to artwork inspired by our study of the cosmos, join four members of the St Andrews' academic community for an informal and interactive event exploring the intersection between art and science.

Participants will be able to experience hands-on demonstrations, have one-on-one discussions with researchers and creators, and contribute to a collaborative artwork - all in the pub!

Creative methods in developmental psychology: Using art to promote joint attention and girls’ interest in STEM

Prof Malinda Carpenter (Professor in Developmental Psychology)

Malinda will be presenting two recent projects: 1) The ‘Peek Boxes’ exhibit at Dundee Science Centre – a collaboration between developmental psychologists and an artist designed to teach parents about the importance of engaging in ‘joint attention’ with their children, and 2) ‘How about you?’ – a short, child-friendly book she has created about female scientist role models designed to increase girls’ interest in STEM subjects and careers.

Armed with the remains of a former telescope of the Royal Observatory (along with a critical component of a working telescope), artist Tim Fitzpatrick and astronomer Anne-Marie Weijmans outline key themes of their ongoing collaboration and speculate on the ideas to follow in new developments.

Dr Graham Bruce (Senior Research Laboratory Manager)

How can we use light to identify fake from genuine and dangerous from safe? Find out how we reveal hidden information in the light emitted by books, whiskies and so much more.

Creative Technology & Tangible Interactive Experiences

Dr Loraine Clarke (Lecturer)

With a background in product design, museum studies and design-based research Loraine’s research focuses on understanding creative technology and tangible interactive artefacts as tools for storytelling and advocacy.
