What happens after a medicine enters the body? Why does the immune system sometimes fight back? And what can we do to better support people living with dementia? From drug discovery to real-world care, join us for a night of science that asks how we can make treatments not just work - but truly work better.
Dementia: 1 or 100 conditions?
Dr Clarissa Giebel
(Senior Research Fellow)
About 1 million people are living with dementia in the UK. But what is dementia? Most people think it affects people's memory, but that is only one part of it. Dementia is an umbrella term for various different subtypes, affecting one's memory, or speech, or movement, or behaviour all differently. In this talk, I will give an overview of the different types of dementia, to help spot dementia better, and highlight how we can raise more awareness in society to reduce stigma and improve access to care.

Allergic to a Cure
Lonnie MacDonald
(Pharmacology PhD Researcher )
Our immune system is built to protect us - but sometimes, it overreacts. T-cells are essential defenders of immunity, but can trigger unexpected allergic reactions to medicines, from mild rashes to life-threatening organ failure. The tricky part? These reactions often slip through lab and animal testing, only appearing once drugs reach human trials. This talk will explore the life cycle of T-cells, the challenges they pose in medicine development, and why understanding these drug reactions is key to advancing patient care.

From Dose to Destination
Liz Challenger
( Research Assistant/PhD student in Infectious Disease Pharmacology)
Have you ever wondered how medicines work? Pharmacokinetics looks at how the body processes medicines – how they’re absorbed, distributed, processed and excreted. This is an important part of understanding how medicines work and helps to decide how they are given. What dose? How often? Is it safe? Where in the body do we need the medicine to have an effect? Join me as I explain more about how we use pharmacokinetics to investigate medicines for infectious diseases.
