From academic research to technology commercialisation with ICURe Explore
Dr Angela Imere
(Research Fellow in Orthopaedic Regenerative Medicine)
Dr Imere will showcase her experience towards market discovery of a biomaterial and gene delivery technology. Exporting research projects outside of the University environment for commercialisation presents many obstacles. Moreover, access to market routes is limited, especially for early career researchers. The Innovate UK ICURe Explore bridges the gap between academic research and industry. This 12-week full-time programme, with up to £35,000 funding, helped Dr Imere to get out of the lab and explore the commercial potential of her technology.
From Lab to Market: My Transition from Academia to Industry
Dr Abshar Hasan
(Head of Research, Co-Founder Mintech Bio Inc.)
The impact of the research of Dr Abshar Hasan extended beyond academia when, in early 2024, he co-founded Mintech Bio Inc., a biotechnology company focused on developing solutions for various oral health issues. Leveraging the insights and innovations from his postdoctoral research, Mintech Bio Inc. aims to address widespread dental problems. Through Mintech Bio Inc., Dr Abshar Hasan is making significant strides in translating scientific research into practical, impactful products that improve oral health on a global scale.
Dr Abshar Hasan’s journey from an academic researcher to an entrepreneur highlights his deep commitment to both scientific discovery and its real-world applications, making him a notable figure in the field of biosciences and bioengineering.

Aspiring a Career in Academia: A Young Medicinal Chemist's Perspective
Dr Mahesh Puthanveedu
(Research Fellow)
Hi all, I am Mahesh, a postdoctoral researcher in the medicinal chemistry division of BDI. I am so glad and thankful to the team for organising ‘postdoc appreciation week’ and inviting me to share my thoughts and experiences.
I joined BDI as a research fellow in Jan 2022 in Dr Shailesh Mistry's group and then moved to Prof Michael Stocks's group in July 2023. My research here is about making small organic molecules targeting GPCRs (G-protein coupled receptors) for studying these receptors in heath and disease. Before moving to the UK, I obtained my PhD in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology, Dortmund, Germany. All my undergraduate and master studies were in different parts of India.
Like many passionate young researchers, I aspire to lead an academic career where I can work on my original research ideas while helping young scientists learn and grow. If you would like to encourage me in this endeavour and to hear more about my journey so far, please join us on 19th Sept.
I am looking forward to meeting you all at this event to appreciate us ‘postdocs’ :)
