Are robots our saviours or bringers of doom? And how can we protect human rights at sea? Join us on Wednesday to find out the answers to these important questions for the future of humanity.
Human-robot synergy: Why humans are robots' greatest challenge and chance
Prof Marc Hanheide
(Professor of Intelligent Robotics & Interactive Systems)
Robots are hailed as saviours of humanity and feared as doom-bringers alike. So, what does it look like when humans and robots work and live together? Are we ready to accept them into our society? Can they live up to those promises? And what are the real challenges and chances scientists identify for a fruitful collaboration between robots and humans? This talk will shine a light on how robots adapt to and learn from humans, how humans and robots can be synergistic, each playing to their strength, and ask the question how our society might have to change in the future.
Turning the tide on human rights at sea
Prof Richard Barnes
(Professor of International Law)
Human rights are inherent and universal, so why aren’t they applied to people at sea? From the mistreatment of seafarers to the willful disregard of maritime migrants’ security, the protective embrace of human rights law is seriously challenged at sea. In this talk, Richard will set out what needs to be done to ensure that human rights at sea are respected.
