Developing fuel technologies is crucial to meet our energy demands and reduce fossil fuel use. Hear about exciting developments in new nuclear, hydrogen and bio fuels, which are key components of energy portfolios worldwide, towards circular economy and meeting net zero by 2050. Join the conversation about how we can fulfil the promises of policy makers and governments for a sustainable future.

Hydrogen – Possible Pathway to a Green Future

Dr. Yagya N Regmi (Research Fellow, Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre and Chemistry, Manchester Metropolitan University)
Hydrogen technologies are a possible solution to the climate crisis. I will describe how hydrogen technologies fit into the future energy landscape. I will present to you the current state of the technology, some of the exciting recent research developments in the field and major challenges scientists and engineers need to overcome. I will then discuss the research activities in my laboratories related to hydrogen technologies. Finally, I will open the presentation for conversations to discuss what needs to be done to fulfil the promises policy makers and governments are making.

Bioenergy in Indonesia and Why It’s Important

Dwica Wulandari (PhD Researcher, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change , University of Manchester)
With the pressure of GHG emissions rising and the limited non-renewable resources, the urgency to use renewable energy as an energy source has become a global interest. One of the popular renewable energies is bioenergy which accounts for 55% of renewable energy today, contributing to energy used for electricity, heat for industry, and liquid biofuel for transportation. Indonesia has abundant potential resources to produce bioenergy, and with appropriate technology, bioenergy can be a leading energy source in the country’s energy mix.

Nuclear Power for Net-Zero?

Dr. Robert Harrison (EPSRC Early Career Fellow/Senior Lecturer, The University of Manchester)
Nuclear power has been used for electricity generation in the UK since the 1950s and after a downturn in the late 20th century is now receiving increased support from the UK Government to help reach Net-Zero by 2050. The designs of nuclear power stations and the fuel that they use has continually evolved, I will discuss the safety and economic drivers for this and describe the state-of-the-art developments in the field before going on to explore the challenges in the area and how nuclear energy can play a role in the helping reach our Net-Zero goals.
