How can science keep us moving - better and for longer? Tonight we discover how the world of implants and wearable technologies is transforming the way we understand and improve our physical activity. Whether on the sports field or in the clinic, this event is all about how human movement can be reimagined.
The hidden battle inside your joints: How engineering, shapes orthopaedic implants
Dr Göksu Kandemir
(Research Associate, Newcastle University)
Every step we take depends on the seamless function of our joints; but what happens when they fail? In my presentation, I will uncover the unseen world of orthopaedic implants: how they wear, why they fail, and what can be done to improve them. With expertise in orthopaedic implant analysis and biomaterial testing, my research bridges engineering and medicine to enhance implant performance and reduce patient pain. From hip replacements to spinal implants, my presentation will explore how cutting-edge tribology is shaping the future of orthopaedic care.

Wearable technology: Future of injury prevention in sport
Steve Griffiths
(PhD student, Newcastle University)
Frustrated by your favourite athlete being injured all the time? Tonight, we will discuss developments in technology to track an athlete's movement outside of traditional laboratory environments. We are now beginning to be able to track the quality of an athlete's movement, using similar sensors to those in smart watches, on-field in different sports. Hopefully, this can identify different movement patterns and therefore prevent injuries in athletes. There is now a unique opportunity to capture human movement data in sporting situations which was only previously possible in laboratories.
