Astronavigation: Finding our way in the world
Dr Gareth Few
(Researcher - E.A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics)
Astronomy has long gone hand-in-hand with navigation because the night sky provides a fixed point of reference. Astronavigation has been used throughout human history to allow us to travel across Earth and beyond, but is often mistaken as a thing of the past. Let me be your navigator on a journey to discover how humans are not the only species on Earth that are guided by the stars and I will show you that many of us still unknowingly use astronomy to get around every day.
Chemistry and Currency: a History of Copper, Silver, and Gold
Dr Michael O'Neill
(Lecturer and Programme Director, BSc Chemistry - The University of Hull)
Copper, silver, and gold have threaded through mankind's history for millennia. Copper gave us the Bronze Age, while silver and gold have become mainly associated with money. The history these metals - both rich in blood and rich in beauty - is enriched by an understanding of their chemistry, and this talk will try to link the two.
