How do we learn to express and manage our emotions? What might be the benefits of Forest Schools for neurodivergent children? Come along and find out more about the growing brain.
From mindfulness to movies: Creating awareness of our emotions
Dr Lynn Pickerell
(Lecturer in Psychology)
One of the first skills we master is how to express our emotions effectively. As babies we need to be comforted, cleaned and fed so we learn to communicate using emotional cues before we walk or talk. In childhood, we learn to manage our emotions so that we can make friends and pay attention in class. As we get older the rational mind takes over and we lose touch with our emotional responses. This can have negative consequences for our health and wellbeing. Lynn will discuss why we might lose touch with our emotional responses and how we can bring awareness to our emotional selves.
Trees for neurodiversity: Thriving through Forest School
Dr Niko Kargas
(Associate Professor in Psychology)
What is a Forest School? The six guiding principles of Forest School reflect the wide range of reported benefits it has to offer, including increased confidence, reduced anxiety and improved social communication. Very little research has investigated the benefits and barriers of autistic children and young people engaging with Forest School. Join us to explore where Forest School is today, the experiences of a group of autistic children and young people and their parents at Forest School, and our next steps forward.
