Roses are red, violets are blue, stay safe out there, love can be dangerous too! The theme for the night is ‘Guns and Roses’, where our speakers talk of criminal activity and violence in romantic relationships. From spotting con men on tinder to domestic violence disclosure schemes, you might end the night having second thoughts about ‘happily ever after’.

How sexism and male misogyny affects heterosexual romantic relationships

Dr. Emily Cross (Psychology Lecturer)
Hostile sexism and misogyny are a growing problem in UK society. It isn't just faceless online trolls we are talking about either, but our own relationships. Tonight we discuss how misogyny undermines men’s and women’s ability to have high-quality intimate relationships. Are men (and women) who are more misogynistic more aggressive in intimate relationships? And if so, why? You will be introduced you to some of the methods social psychologists use to answer these questions and also pick up a few insights gleaned from our speaker's 10+ years of research on sexism

Criminal histories and domestic abuse: how much of a partner’s past should we have a right to know about?

Dr. Katerina Hadjimatheou (Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology)
Clare’s Law allows police in the UK to share information about domestic abuse perpetrators’ criminal histories with their partners if they believe this will protect them from harm. Since its launch in 2014, tens of thousands of disclosures have been made and similar schemes have been introduced in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US and Spain. But what impact is criminal history information having on victims of domestic abuse, and what about the rights of offenders? Is it safer to lay the deep, dark past bare? Or should some of it remain hidden?
