In our final Our Body themed night, join us as we hear from three researchers from the University of Birmingham about Super Llamas, the Nationwide Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme, and the use of biomarkers in identifying concussions.

The Sweet Secret of Battling Virus!

Dr Xin gao (Post-Doc)
Dr. Xin Gao, now at the forefront of bioscience research at the University of Birmingham, blends a rich background from University College London with a passion for exploring the depths of structural biology. Delving into the complexities of proteins and their roles in immunological diseases and Cancer. This journey is not just about the groundbreaking discoveries in COVID-19 antibody research; it’s also about merging scientific rigor with a flair for photography, illustrating the beauty of science through different lenses.

Changing people’s behaviour to improve heart health through the nationwide Abdominal (tummy) Aortic (main blood vessel of the body) Aneurysm (abnormal bulge) screening programme

Tom Withers (Research Fellow )
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a condition where the main artery of the body, the aorta, has an abnormal bulge. We undertook a research study which aimed to design an intervention which helps change the behaviour of those with an AAA so they live a healthier life we called it the CRISP intervention. We then tested the CRISP intervention to see if it works and found out that it was well liked by patients but improvements can be made. This talk will discuss the CRISP intervention and what we know about how to change people’s behaviour so they live a healthier life

Comparing physiological biomarkers to post concussion symptoms

Asha Strom (Research Associate)
Sophie Prosser (Research Associate)
We would like to chat through our study deign and findings. Our study looked into blood biomarkers alongside subjective SCAT6 scores during the return to play protocol, in order to identify possible objective assessments for the future, to more safely govern post concussion care.
