Promoting optimal experiences in exercise: time to change our approach?

Dr Trish Jackman (Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology)
Rebecca Hawkins (Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology)
Despite the well-known benefits of physical activity, increasing levels of engagement remains a public health challenge. This talk will first draw upon research on optimal experiences in exercise before discussing research that has challenged the assumption that SMART goals are most effective for physical activity promotion. We will offer an overview of some of the latest research concerning optimal experience in exercise and provide ideas as to how individuals can optimise their exercise experience.

Being a virtual patient – does it help?

Sean Morton (Senior Lecturer in Health and Social Care)
Trevor Simpson (Principal Lecturer in Health and Social Care)
Our research looked at using Virtual Reality to allow healthcare students to understand what it is like to be a patient and whether it would be a useful tool in healthcare education. We recorded a VR 360 degree video experience and wanted to apply this popular gaming technology to a clinical application. The video is immersive and observational and allows the wearer to simply be a patient. The study feedback provided us with many observations, some known, some unknown and the overall outcome was that students noted that they would improve their approach and practice in a real life experience.
