Health can be at the heart of almost all of our decisions and questions. Is living in a big city bad for your heart? What can be done to stop age related conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease? This event will shed light on these questions.

How can air pollution affect my heart health?

Courtney Riley (Postgraduate Research Student)
Dr Jacobo Elies Gomez (Associate Professor in Pharmacology)
More than forty cities in the UK (Bradford, Leeds and Manchester are in the top 10) exceed the officially set limits of air pollution. Smog and air pollutants have a dramatic impact on health and contribute to the development of serious respiratory and cardiovascular conditions (allergies and heart attacks). Courtney Riley and Jacobo Elies will talk about how air pollution can induce cardiac arrhythmias and how much can be done to change this.

Does how you live determine whether you get dementia?

Dr Ritchie Williamson (Director of Research - Associate Professor in Therapeutics)
The factors determining how we age are varied and still not fully understood, but researchers are working hard to address hese questions. Recent evidence suggest that different aspects of our lives, all the way from our early years to our later years can influence our chances of developing dementia. We will explore what these factors are and if we can reduce our risk.
