What if we could anticipate exactly when and how we might get sick? Scientists are looking into our genetic code for clues to predict the chances of getting ill. This combined with new ways of modelling heart disease are transforming the future of healthcare!

Decoding Ethics: The Potential for Genomic Prediction in Human Health and Behaviour

Dr Emma Meaburn (Researcher in Bioethics and Policy at Nuffield Council on Bioethics )
Maili Raven-Adams (Researcher in Bioethics and Policy at Nuffield Council on Bioethics )
Welcome to a thought-provoking talk on the potential implications of genomics for everyday life. We'll discuss ethics — considerations about if and how something should be pursued —and genomics, the study of our genes and their functions.

Our focus will be on the real-world implications of using genomic information to inform healthcare and education, specifically through predictions. With your participation we’ll explore the opportunities and dilemmas it presents, and the types of safeguards you think are needed for the information to be used responsibly.

Transforming cardiology with ‘heart in a dish’ models

Dr Momina Yazdani (BHF Clinical Research Fellow)
As a Cardiology Specialist Registrar and Clinical Research Fellow, Momina’s work focuses on new insights into diagnosing and stratifying cardiac disease patients. Her main interest lies in arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, a rare condition where the heart’s structure can become weak due to issues with development. She will take us on a journey to explore how ‘heart in a dish’ models help us understand this disease and develop new treatments.
