Come to Pint of Science to hear about what Our Body can do. Dr Richie Kirwan will tell us about keto diets and the impact on our hearts. Dr Charlotte Krahe will talk about pain and how we perceive it. Dr Jon Ashley will cover DNA and how it can be used like paper origami for nanotechnology.

Keto diets: Good for your waistline but what about your heart?

Dr Richie Kirwan (Senior Lecturer)
Low carb, keto, and carnivore diets are everywhere online, promising quick weight loss and better health. But there’s a major catch: many people see their cholesterol rise, increasing their risk of heart disease.
Keto communities online often claim high cholesterol is harmless, or even healthy, telling people to ignore medical advice.
In this talk, we’ll explore what these diets are, how they affect the body, and what the long term consequences might be.
We’ll also share simple, evidence based tips for protecting your heart health

Ouch! How other people influence the pain we feel?

Dr Charlotte Krahe (Senior Lecturer)
In this presentation, we will invite you to consider a hugely important bodily sense: our sense of pain. While we all know that pain alerts us to a threat to our body in its environment, and we intuitively look for support from others when we are in pain, science has lagged behind: only in the last 10-15 years have psychologists and neuroscientists begun to understand how interacting with others – like our loved ones or healthcare professionals – can causally influence our pain. We will present fascinating insights from the laboratory and clinical settings to show that how much pain we feel and display, and our neural responses to pain, are shaped by our social environment.

DNA Origami: Nature’s Nanotech Toolkit

Dr Jon Ashley (Senior Lecturer)
DNA is best known as the molecule that carries genetic information, but it can also be used as a remarkable building material. In this talk, I’ll introduce DNA origami, a technique that folds strands of DNA into tiny shapes and structures far too small to see with the naked eye. These miniature creations are not just beautiful they could help scientists design smarter drug delivery systems, build nanoscale machines, and develop new tools for medicine and technology. Join me to discover how researchers are turning the code of life into a kind of molecular Lego, opening up a world of possibilities at the smallest scale imaginable.
