Prepare for a fiery discussion as our speakers unravel the complex relationship between wildfires and climate change. Delve into the science behind increasingly intense wildfires, exploring their ecological impacts and implications for our changing climate. Join us to learn how wildfire research is crucial for mitigating future risks and finding sustainable solutions in a warming world.
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Fire
Theo Keeping
(Wildfire researcher, PhD University of Reading)
In early June last year wildfire blazed across Eastern Canada, causing an air quality in New York City among other highly populated areas. The terrible scale of this event led us to ask the questions, how much more likely did climate change make these fires? And how much more likely can we expect them to become in the future? Join us to answer these questions and more in a (hopefully) pleasant stroll through the (hopefully not) fire-blasted landscape of future Canada!
Why we will never get rid of wildfires and why we shouldn’t want to
Olivia Haas
(PhD researcher at Imperial College London )
You unlock your phone and another article about climate devastation pops up, alongside it the image of a raging wildfire. In recent years, wildfires have become synonymous with the climate emergency. But wildfires have shaped the Earth since the beginning of time, long before humans arrived. So, what drives wildfires? This talk will explore how satellite data helps scientists map wildfires globally and understand their pattern. In turn, this can inform us on what wildfires were like in the past, and how they might change in the future.
