Step into the future of healthcare, where innovation meets the human body. Jayapiriya explores biofuel cells that turn blood sugar into electricity, while Madeleine unveils microfluidic devices that detect early signs of ovarian cancer. Discover how the body’s own resources are powering the next wave of life-changing health technology.

Sugar Rush: Powering Medical Implants with the Human Body

Dr. Jayapiriya Umarani Sivakumar (Post doctoral Research Associate, University of Bath)
What if we could power medical devices using the same energy our bodies use? Most implants, like pacemakers, rely on batteries that eventually run out and need surgery to replace. My research looks at "biofuel cells" that solve this problem. These tiny devices act like miniature power plants, turning the sugar in your blood directly into electricity. By using simple chemistry instead of complex biology, we can create smaller, longer-lasting power sources. Join me to see how we are turning blood sugar into a lifelong battery for the next generation of medical tech.

Caught in the Vortex: Microfluidic Strategies for Improved Ovarian Cancer Detection

Madeleine Strickland (PhD Researcher, University of Bath)
Ovarian cancer is branded a silent killer due to its symptoms being non-specific and appearing in later stages of disease - even though bodily fluids contain tiny particles called sEVs carrying clues as to whether someone may have ovarian cancer from its earliest stage. Used in practice, however, their size and low numbers make sEVs difficult to isolate and use for disease detection. This talk presents how vortex breakdown, a fluid phenomenon, can be used to separate these tiny biological particles based on their size - potentially unlocking a gateway to better, earlier ovarian cancer detection.
