A night of cutting edge and thoroughly intriguing physics! Mark will talk about extreme weather on other planets and Bob will take us to the interface between linguistics and quantum physics. (Please note, Mark's talk replaces the previously advertised talk by Daniela Bortoletto about the Large Hadron Collider).

From quantum to the brain in pictures

Professor Bob Coecke (Professor of Quantum Foundations, Logics and Structures)
For well over a decade, we developed an entirely pictorial (and formally rigorous!) presentation of quantum theory [*]. At present, experiments are being setup aimed at establishing the age at which children could effectively learn quantum theory in this manner. Meanwhile, the pictorial language has also been successful in the study of natural language, and very recently we have started to apply it to model cognition. Bob will present the key ingredients of the pictorial language as well as their interpretation across disciplines.

Extreme weather on other worlds

Mark Hammond (PhD student in Atmospheric Physics)
Twenty-five years ago, we had no proof that planets existed around any stars apart from our Sun. Today, we have discovered thousands of planets orbiting other stars. Some of the most unusual worlds are “tide-locked” planets, which always present the same side to their star, so have a permanent day-side and night-side. Mark will present simulations and theories of what the climates and weather would be like on these unusual worlds, and talk about what this means for their habitability.
