What is an enzyme? How can we use enzymes to help us clean our clothes? Why would we? Join Ellie and Dragos, PhD students from Northumbria University to see how the addition of enzymes in laundry can save the planet, reducing carbon emissions, water waste and money!
How we can use 'dry' enzymes to save the planet one wash cycle at a time
Ellie Ashcroft
(PhD student, Northumbria University)
What is an enzyme? How can we use enzymes in laundry detergent? In collaboration with Procter and Gamble my PhD is looking at enzymes operating under dry conditions to be used on clothes prior to the wash. As the time and temperature is lower less energy is required saving on consumer costs and reducing the carbon footprint.
Using enzymes for a more sustainable way of washing our laundry
Dragos-constantin Dumitrescu
(PhD student, Northumbria University)
Dragos is a first year Ph.D. student in Biological Sciences at Northumbria University. His project is focused on enzyme discovery working in collaboration with P&G to find new enzymes that can clean sebum stains at low temperatures. By reducing the temperature of the washing, we can reduce energy consumption which in turn reduces carbon emissions.
