Obesity – food for thought
Rachel Wilson
(PhD student in stem cell brain modelling)
We know that our height is decided by our genes. Amazingly, more and more studies are showing that your genetics play a major role in the risk of whether you will become obese. Rachel’s research focuses on how genetics impact a region in the brain called the hypothalamus. This part of the brain decides how hungry or full you feel. If you are genetically a hungrier person, you are more likely to be obese. In the lab, Rachel is transforming human stem cells into hypothalamic neurons and uses these to understand this phenomenon more in depth.
Mum's second heart: the placenta
Dr Suchita Nadkarni
(Senior Lecturer in Immunology)
Growing an entire human within your own body – it almost sounds like science fiction! During pregnancy, mothers develop an organ called the placenta that grows alongside the baby, that works as a barrier between mother and child. What shall and shall not pass? Come and find out how the mother’s immune system is the key, and how being pregnant not only affects the child but also the mother’s heart!
