Tonight we'll take you on a bit of a journey. Maybe it’s a journey that will make you a little nervous of what's lurking out there. Maybe there's a bug that’s bitten our country and we're all really rather unwell? Help is at hand from our two sets of researchers tonight as we keep you safe on holiday and offer an antidote to all the "fake news" with some real facts on Brexit. You're in for quite a ride.
Bad bugs and wicked worms: Is it safe to go on holiday?
Dr Dan Horton
(Associate Dean Research and Innovation (FHMS), Reader In Veterinary Virology)
Dr Martha Betson
(Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Parasitology)
The recent tragic case of rabies in a British citizen bitten whilst on holiday, and the story of a couple’s romantic getaway ruined by worms burrowing into their feet could be enough to put you off travelling abroad forever. However these rare events highlight a shocking and unacceptable truth: that more than a billion people of the world’s poorest people are still affected by infectious diseases that should be preventable. We will provide some shocking statistics and practical travel tips, and explain why researchers in the UK can, and should, address these neglected diseases.
Why we’re still talking about Brexit
Dr Simon Usherwood
(Reader in Politics)
Even though we’re nearly 3 years on from the referendum, it might feel like the country still hasn’t worked through all its issues with Brexit. If you can stand any more of it, we’ll be talking about why this is and what we can do about it.
