Architecture is never just about shelter—it is a living infrastructure that shapes how we think, work, and live. From research halls to market stalls, from the deliberately designed to the spontaneously formed, our built environment reflects diverse ways of creating knowledge and sustaining life. Join us to explore how architecture can foster creativity, resilience, and more sustainable ways of living.

Ingenuity Unplanned: The Architectural Wisdom of Informality

Ms Ziqiu Ren (PhD Candidate in Architecture, University of Manchester)
Explore the spontaneous and ingenious adaptations found in urban marketplaces, where everyday materials become functional art. This talk delves into the world of informal architectural practices that thrive without formal design processes, reflecting a bottom-up creativity that challenges our conventional views on sustainability and technology in building. We’ll discuss how these grassroots innovations might teach us new ways to think about architecture and urban planning.

How does Architecture Matter to Science and Technology?

Dr Benjamin Blackwell (Lecturer in Architectural Studies)
The study of laboratory architecture often focuses on the aspirations of the “starchitects” commissioned to design scientific facilities. We often hear how these designs aim to spark conversations among scientists, breaking down disciplinary boundaries. Yet the reality of how scientists and engineers negotiate such spaces is underexplored. This talk, drawing on fieldwork at the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre, argues that slow ethnographic engagement is needed to understand how architecture matters to knowledge production.
