What can animal behaviour tell us about our world—and ourselves? This session dives into how we think about animals, why we care about some more than others, and what their behaviour reveals about both nature and human impact. From the psychology behind our moral choices to curious animal talents and hidden signs of ecological stress, these talks offer a fascinating glimpse into the minds of animals—and the surprising ways they reflect our own.

Inside Animal Minds: What Their Behaviours Reveal

Dr Clara Muniz-Diez (Senior Research Associate)
Ever wondered if your dog feels guilty or if a horse can do maths? Or why a bird can sound like a chainsaw? Whether you've asked these questions or just wondered what animals are thinking, this talk will give you four ways to understand animal behaviour. Clara will share some cute and surprising animal facts while also showing how humans sometimes get it wrong when interpreting what animals are really doing.

Wild warnings: How animal behaviour can signal conservation needs

Dr Rucha Karkarey (Senior Research Associate)
Conservation often reacts when species are already in trouble, but what if we could act earlier? Before populations drop, animals start to adapt - changing how they eat, migrate, or mate. These small changes are nature's way of warning us about stress caused by humans or the environment. In this talk, Rucha will share a surprising example from the Indian Ocean, where fish changed their mating behaviour in response to fishing. By noticing these early signs, we could shift from reacting to protecting species before it's too late.

Does understanding animals better change our moral concern for them?

Dr Jared Piazza (Senior Lecturer in Psychology)
In this talk, Jared will explore why we care about animals, why some animals are treated better than others, and what influences how we view them. He’ll look at how seeing animals as food can affect our moral attitudes toward them and discuss ways we can expand our concern for animals. By understanding the psychology behind our attitudes, we can better understand how to treat animals with more compassion.
