It's Just a Question of Time: Quantum Time

The phrase 'quantum technology' is being used a lot nowadays, but what does it actually mean, and how might it affect our lives on a day-to-day basis? In this talk we'll look at some ways in which scientists are harnessing the quantum properties of individual atoms to develop new ways of seeing and sensing the world around us. From improved brain scanning to more accurate product quality testing, atom-based quantum sensors are coming soon to a location near you!

Our world marches to the beat of time as measured by atomic clocks. But how on earth can atoms be used to measure the time? In this talk, I'll explain how atoms, microwave beams, and lasers can be combined to create an extremely fast and regular "ticking", and how atomic clocks underpin both everyday life and fundamental physics research. Along the way, we'll see why the Sun just isn't good enough for timekeeping, talk about how fountains aren't just ornamental garden pieces, and look to the future of timekeeping. Everyone needs accurate clocks - but these days, who has the time?
