How would you spend the healthcare budget?
Dr Carlos Sillero-Rejon
(Research associate)
Professor Will Hollingworth
(Professor of Health Economics)
It’s no secret that money is tight in the NHS. We’ve all seen the headlines about new treatments not being available on the NHS because they’re too expensive. And choosing to fund one treatment or service could mean that something else can’t be funded. In this talk, Professor Will Hollingworth and Carlos Sillero Rejon will explain how funding decisions are made in the NHS and will give you the opportunity to have a go at making a decision yourself!
Should "quality of life" be just about being healthy? !! Live via zoom due to speaker isolating !!
Isabella Floredin
(Senior Research Associate)
The term ‘quality of life’ is inherently ambiguous. What do people need for a good ‘quality of life’? Are those things the same for everybody? Isabella Floredin’s PhD is trying to understand what ‘quality of life’ means for young people with disabilities. She is exploring both the ‘doing’ and ‘being’ that these young people can achieve, and how these play into their quality of life.
Turning the juggernaut: why stopping some NHS procedures might be best
Josie Morley
(PhD Student )
Why might it be best to stop some NHS procedures? Sometimes, evidence shows a particular procedure isn’t as helpful as first thought or isn’t any better than another treatment that’s cheaper or less invasive. But it can take a long time for change to filter through the healthcare system. Josie Morley will talk about her PhD looking at the process of stopping or restricting certain NHS procedures to free up funding for others.
