To celebrate and countdown the launch of Pint of Science 2018, we'll be "launching" our minds into space. Set in the heart of Fletcher Moss park, join guests Dr Evan Keane of Jodrell Bank along with winner and runner-up of BBC 2 programme "Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?" Dr Suzie Imber and Tim Gregory. University of Manchester Astrophysics societies will also be there with some hands on activities. The countdown begins: join us for an unmissable evening!
Terrestrial Interference 101
Dr Evan Keane
(Astrophysicist, Jodrell Bank)
Evan searches for explosions in deep space with the world's most powerful telescopes. One can see the properties of the Universe imprinted on the light from these explosions and use them to understand how it evolves. However, day-to-day tasks for a radio astronomer are more Earthly. These telescopes can detect a mobile phone signal from beyond Saturn - so what if somebody brings one far closer? How do we see through the haze of 4G, computers, electric fences, air traffic control, satellites ...
Join Evan to hear about his detective work and a particularly unexpected discovery.
