This event explores innovative approaches to mental health support, from co-designed digital tools that better engage young people to new ways of rethinking how environments influence wellbeing. Together, the talks highlight how inclusive design—both online and in physical spaces—can create more meaningful, accessible, and supportive mental health experiences for diverse populations.
Can games make mental health support work better?
Helen Stocks
(Research Associate - Heriot-Watt University)
Why are so many mental health apps downloaded but rarely used? In this talk, I’ll explore how we are rethinking digital mental health support through the SMILE project. Rather than designing tools for young people, we work in partnership with them to create interactive and engaging experiences that move beyond traditional therapy models. This talk will highlight how co-design, gaming approaches, and youth perspectives can help shape more effective and meaningful mental health support.
Why do some spaces sooth and others overwhelm?
Reshma Venugopal
(PhD student - Heriot-Watt University)
Ever dread going somewhere that other people seem to love - whether that is a packed shopping centre or a camping trip in the middle of nowhere? For some people, shopping feels exciting and camping feels peaceful. For others, the crowds, lights, noise, smells, insects, cold, or unfamiliar surroundings can make those same places feel stressful or overwhelming. My research explores why that happens, focusing on the restorative potential of urban and natural spaces for neurodivergent people. I look at how different environments can shape stress, attention, sensory experience, and wellbeing, and what this might mean for creating more supportive and inclusive spaces.
