Join our talented researchers for an exciting show which will examine the technological advances that are influencing our lives. Talks will explore whether we can build software like LEGO, how robots are improving agriculture efficiency, new ways to cut MRI waiting times and consider human freedom in the AI age.
What If You Could Build Software Like LEGO?
Qurat ul ain Ali
(Rolls Royce Engineer)
Modern machines, from cars to aircraft, run on enormous amounts of software, making them complex to design and maintain. What if engineers could build software like LEGO? This talk explores how visual modelling and reusable blocks help engineers design, test, and generate reliable software for complex systems more easily and collaboratively.

Smart Vines: How Robots Are Transforming Agriculture and Vineyards
Dr Gricel Vazquez
(Research Associate in the Department of Computer Science, University of York)
Isobel Standen
(PhD Student in Philosophy, University of York)
This presentation explores robot–human collaboration technologies for automating vineyard tasks such as monitoring and harvesting. We will discuss the technological and safety challenges of implementing robots in agriculture. Join us to see our real robot dog in action!

Using an Atomic Amplifier to Cut your MRI Waiting Times
Dean McGettigan
(PhD Student, Centre for Hyperpolarisation in Magnetic Resonance, University of York)
Standard MRI is slow because it relies on faint atomic signals, forcing patients to remain still in a noisy machine. My research uses "hyperpolarisation" to amplify these signals shortening MRI scans from hours to seconds. We’re swapping long, noisy scans for instant insights.

Safe AI and the Importance of Protecting Human Freedom
Samuel Lee Messiter
(PhD Student in the Institute for Safe Autonomy, University of York)
We increasingly hear claims that AI can benefit or harm us. However, philosophically, we may question: What do we mean by benefit or harm? This talk will broadly argue that when evaluating AI, the main question should be: How is it affecting human freedom?
