What does TOWIE tell us about the neuroscience of emotions?

Dr Sebastian Korb (Lecturer, Department of Psychology, University of Essex)
Botox injections are a common practice among the characters of the series 'The Only Way is Essex'. However, probably unbeknownst to Amy Childs and the rest of the cast, the paralysis of facial muscles can influence one's feelings and the perception of others' emotions. In this event, I will discuss the facial feedback hypothesis and the science behind it.

Copy me, copy you: what babies can tell us about how we irritate others

Dr Carina de Clerk (Lecturer, Psychology, University of Essex)
It's a common feeling: while talking to a friend or colleague you suddenly realise you are copying their behaviour or accent. This tendency to spontaneously and subconsciously 'mimic' others' behaviours plays an important role in social interactions. For example, it increases liking between strangers, and makes our interactions more smooth and enjoyable. In this talk I will discuss what babies can tell us about the development of this important social ability.
