Around the world populations are living for longer. This presents new challenges to researchers who are trying to answer the questions: 'How do we live longer, while also living well?'. In this event, we will hear from two researchers who are delving into these questions around healthy ageing. Can inflammation in blood tell us about the earliest stages of dementia? And how do we weigh the benefits—and costs—of extending life through research? We will connect the research about molecular clues to societal challenges, asking how science can serve a longer, healthier future!

The Hidden Clues in Blood: Inflammation and Dementia Risk

Dorsa Abdolkarimi (PhD Student)
Dementia develops silently over decades, with symptoms appearing only in later stages – often too late for intervention. Inflammation is increasingly seen as a key contributor during these early phases. Using one of the world’s largest biomedical databases, we studied blood samples taken up to 17 years before diagnosis to identify inflammatory molecules that differed between people who developed dementia and those who didn’t, shedding light on their potential role in disease development.

Extending Life or Wasting Resources? The Truth About Ageing Research

Gabriela Da Cruz Meda (Research Technician)
With the ageing population on the rise, and natural resources becoming scarce, why should we invest time and money towards ageing research? Is research into ageing and increasing lifespan ethical, or should we direct our efforts towards younger generations? Would increasing life expectancy make things worse? In this talk we will tackle the tough questions around research into ageing, and show how is actually imperative for overall better health!
