This evening we'll be taking to the skies, home to long distance migratory birds and a potential tool in the battle against global warming.

Mapping bird migration and understanding its ecological drivers

Dr Marius Somveille (Research Fellow, Centre for Biodiversity and Environment Research)
Billions of birds migrate every year between breeding and wintering grounds, exhibiting a remarkable diversity of routes and seasonal destinations, generating a major redistribution of birds worldwide. Despite this, the underlying forces driving bird migration patterns remain largely unknown. From mapping bird migration, my results indicate that birds tend to distribute across the world in an energy-efficient way, and that migration is an adaptation allowing birds to optimise their energy budget. This work provides a basis for predicting how climate change may affect migratory birds.

How an artificial dust layer could help fight climate change

Dr Peter Irvine (Lecturer in Climate Change & Solar Geoengineering)
Stratospheric aerosol geoengineering is the idea that we could add a layer of reflective particles to the upper atmosphere to increase the amount of light reflected by earth which would cool it down. Stratospheric aerosol geoengineering is not a substitute for necessary cuts to greenhouse gas emissions but could it help reduce climate risks? There is no plan B for climate, but is it time to start thinking about plan A+?
