What goes on inside our head affects every aspect of our life. Martin and Phil from the University of South Wales unlock the secrets of the human mind to answer two big questions: Are you sabotaging your own chances of meeting Mr(s) Right and how can you make online dating work for you? What is ‘madness’, why has history been so unkind to those with mental health conditions and what lies ahead?
Why Online Dating Doesn’t Work
Dr Martin Graff
(Reader in Psychology, South Wales University)
There’s much evidence that being in a good relationship can be beneficial to our health, happiness and wellbeing. But should we resort to online dating in order to find one? It may not be the easy answer. This talk looks at why we should be cautious in our online dating pursuits. For example, people make bad decisions in online dating and those we contact are often not what they seem. There’s also no evidence that the algorithms used by dating sites to match us with a desirable partner actually work. The talk concludes with some ideas for maximizing our chances in an online dating environment.
The History of Madness
Dr Philip John Tyson
(Senior Lecturer in Psychology, South Wales University)
Madness, Mental Illness, Psychiatric Disorders, or whatever name you prefer, has been a constant presence in all cultures and civilisations across time. Yet perspectives on what constitutes and causes madness have evolved over time, often being determined by dominant schools of thought at particular times: while Medieval ideas portray madness as a punishment from God, early c.20th ideas focussed on the role of childhood experience and parenting in mental disorder. This talk considers changes in perspectives on mental disorder over time and discusses present and future perspectives.
