The rise and brilliance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots such as ChatGPT, Bard, LamDA and others has sparked a lot of hype and panic about the possibility of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) taking over. Talk of the so-called AGI singularity is becoming more prevalent and it seems that the possibility of AI becoming sentient is closer than we think!

But while AI and our interactions with it are becoming increasingly human-like, it is imperative that we can tell the difference between a machine and a human, even though this is becoming more difficult than ever!

What would a comprehending computer look like?

Dr Neil Saunders (Senior Lecturer in Mathematical Sciences)
In 1950, Alan Turing famously devised his ‘Imitation Game’ as a thought experiment to determine whether a computer was genuinely intelligent. In 1980, John Searle produced his famous Chinese Room Argument to show that even if a computer passed the Imitation Game, it still wouldn’t comprehend anything.

This talk will be a whistle-stop tour of the mathematics behind Artificial Intelligence which will revisit these classic thought experiments in the context of the explosion on the scene of chatbots like ChatGPT and Bard. It will ask what, if anything, does AI actually understand?

Chatbots do not speak our language

Professor Maria Arche ( Professor of Linguistics & Spanish; Lead of the Centre for Research & Enterprise in Language)
What makes AI so brilliant, but why at the same time this implies that it doesn’t understand the way we humans do. This talk will demonstrate that while we can have a reasonably fluent conversation with an AI chatbot, the way we speak is in sharp contrast to how they do — and that makes all the difference when it comes to crucial questions about how much trust should we be placing in AI.
