Seeing with Sound: Applications of Ultrasound to Explore Human Function
Dr Logan Wade
(Research Fellow)
Ultrasound is widely known as a non-invasive tool for monitoring prenatal health and detecting abnormal growths. But did you know it is also widely used to understand how humans move through the world? Scientists use ultrasound to study how muscles generate force, which has profound implications for amputees, as well as those with spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy. In this talk, Dr. Logan Wade, a clinical biomechanist with over a decade of experience, will discuss the science behind ultrasound, its role in research on human movement, and live demo how ultrasound reveals muscles in action.

Beyond the Limit: How Energy Metabolism Fuels Human Performance at the Extremes
Dr Josh Bakker-Dyos
(Senior Registrar (Anaesthesia), Royal Navy Medical Officer and PhD Candidate)
How do humans push their bodies to the brink in some of the world’s harshest environments? Join Dr Josh Bakker-Dyos—a serving military doctor and PhD candidate at the University of Bath—as he uncovers the science behind “further, faster, higher” performance. Drawing on cutting-edge research in energy metabolism, this talk explores the remarkable adaptations that enable soldiers, athletes, and adventurers to operate at their limits. Discover how the latest findings in physiology reveal our true potential—and the surprising ways our bodies cope when pushed to the extreme.
