Following on from the tradition of York's social reformist roots, there are many academics, researchers and practitioners in the city today who work to champion those individuals whom might be considered to fall within a 'vulnerable group' within our society. In keeping with this theme, we hope to introduce to you three such individuals - all with very different experiences and areas of expertise. We hope that you will join us for what promises to be a truly engaging and informative night.

A sensorial experience of eating

Ruth Knight (PhD student in the Department of Psychology, University of York)
Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any mental health condition, and those battling any eating disorder often have experiences of relapse. This makes people suffering from an eating disorder some of the most vulnerable in our society. Common treatments do not seem to address all aspects of these conditions. Research using multisensory illusions has shown that the experience of the body is different for those living with eating disorders, which could be the foundation of a different kind of treatment.

The role of the forensic psychologist: can we prevent crime?

John Atkinson (Forensic Psychologist and part time lecturer at York University)
John's presentation will focus on contemporary and responsive approaches to working with mentally disordered clients at risk of offending. This will give us a fascinating insight into the world of working with such individuals from the perspective of a Forensic Psychologist.

Women and drug abuse

Ian Hamilton (Lecturer and researcher in Mental Health, University of York)
Women’s deaths as a result of drug use are up by a staggering 82% over the last decade. Paradoxically, fewer women are using drugs, yet record numbers are dying as a result of using them. Female drug use has been largely ignored by research. This hasn't been helped by men dominating senior positions within the field of addiction. An expert on substance use issues, who has featured on both The Conversation and Radio 4, Ian will discuss some of the issues with respect to women and drugs in our society.
