Researchers from the Institute of Metabolic Science will discuss ongoing research in how obesity infleunces pregnancy and risks of developing dementia.

Origins of Obesity: how the environment we experience in the womb alters our lifelong health

Dr Laura Dearden (Group Leader, IMS, University of Cambridge)
Laura Dearden is a group leader at the Institute of Metabolic Science. Her research investigates how obesity and diabetes in pregnancy impact on the parts of the brain that control food intake. In this talk Laura will discuss what human birth cohorts and animal models have taught us about this topic, and how we are working on strategies to help women break the intergenerational transmission of obesity risk

Brittle fat tissue

Dr. Aggie Jakubowska (Medical doctor (Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine))
Dr Aggie Jakubowska is a medical doctor specialising in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Professor Sir O'Rahilly's Group, studying what happens when the “scaffolding” that supports our fat tissue (the extracellular matrix) breaks down, and how this can lead to diabetes.

Calories, Capillaries & Cognition: The Hidden Link Between Obesity and Dementia

Dr. Laura Sheppard (Postdoctoral Researcher, IMS, University of Cambridge)
Dr Laura Sheppard is a postdoctoral researcher in the Evans' Lab at the MRC Institute of Metabolic Science. Her research focuses on how obesity changes the blood vessels in the brain, and how this might link to dementia. When she's not thinking about brains she can be found watching Lord of the Rings or playing D&D
