Metals and minerals are all around us, but how do they get from the earth to our iPhones? Our talks tonight will illuminate the world of mining and mineral processing. First, we will find out what role bubbles play in getting the minerals we need. Then, we'll zoom into the world of microbes to see how microscopic life can reduce mining waste and keep our environment safe.

The F words of mineral processing: fluids, froth, flotation

Dr. Diego Mesa Peña (Post Doctoral Researcher, Imperial College London)
What's full of bubbles, froth, and essential for our society? Nope, not your Guinness - it's mineral processing! Come learn what minerals and metals we need from the earth and how we get them. We'll journey through fluids and flotation tanks to show you the ins and outs of mineral processing!

Mining mine waste

Dr. Ana Santos (Green Economy Fellow, Natural History Museum)
Mine waste can be toxic to our environment and you guessed it: wasteful. So how do we get the most out of mining and keep our environment safe from toxic waste? Introducing: Microbes! My talk will dive into the microscopic world of bioleaching, a technology that gives mining waste a brand new life!
