Our bodies are hosts to trillions of bacteria on which we depend. However, our tiny overloads sometimes need reigning in. Join us to hear about advances in our understanding of the bacterial communities that reside within us and how we are working to tackle the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance and us

Bryony Ackroyd (CIDCATS, University of York)
Antibiotic resistance is a hot topic at the moment, but what exactly is antibiotic resistance and how does it impact our bodies? During this talk we will uncover the role both humans and bacteria play in antibiotic resistance and some of the many ways innovative science is being used to try and tackle the growing problem.

Following (and looking after) your gut

James Chong (Senior Lecturer in Microbiology, University of York)
The microbes in your gut play a big role in your health. But what happens when you assault your gut microbiome with antibiotics? And is there a better way to deliver these life-saving drugs without throwing the microbial residents of your insides into chaos? James will outline a pilot study he is leading in collaboration with other colleagues at the University of York and Hull-York Medical School to develop non-invasive methods to understand how different methods of antibiotic delivery might be equally effective, but less disruptive, to your intestinal zen.
