Medical research has historically ignored and underfunded issues that affect gender minorities, tonight Dr Emma Chambers and Dr Alison Berner will share their work to close this gender gap, exploring how menopause can affect our immune systems and how we can improve cancer care for transgender people.

Menopause - an immune ageing event

Dr. Emma Chambers (Senior Lecturer in Immunology (Queen Mary University of London))

How do we TRANSform cancer care?

Dr. Alison Berner (Clinical Senior Lecturer in Medical Oncology (Queen Mary University of London), Honorary Consultant in Medical Oncology (St. Bartholomew’s Hospital), Clinical Lead for the UK Cancer and Transition Service (Chelsea & Westminster’s Hospitals))
One in every hundred people in the UK identifies as transgender, and up to half of these may get cancer during their lives. Being trans can affect the care you receive in every step of the cancer pathway from screening to treatment. This includes the way cancer makes you feel, how you experience healthcare, and the correct tests and treatments if you have accessed hormones or surgeries as part of transition. However, research and care lags behind compared to cisgender people. This talk will describe what we know about cancer in trans people and how researchers should work with the trans community to design research, personalise care, and improve experience and outcomes.
