Come along for a fascinating evening learning about how our brains interpret the world via our senses (sometimes making mistakes) and for some insights into how cutting edge technology can plug directly in to our brains!
How our mind makes up our reality
Dr Juan Álvaro Gallego
(Senior Lecturer)
We live our lives under the impression that we see the world as it is. However, illusions and other magic tricks suggest that our mind can be easily tricked. Here, I will give an overview of how our senses shape our world, how our mind makes up stories about it that it then tells to us, and how even our body has a say. Instead of working like a reliable computer, it seems like our mind is more like a storyteller that has evolved to keep us going.
Mind over matter: bridging brains and machines through muscle
Ciara Gibbs
(PhD Student)
This talk will take you into the realm where technology meets human intent, through the advanced field of Electromyography (EMG) and man-machine interfacing. This exploration reveals the potential for a deeper connection between humans and technology, transcending traditional interaction methods. We'll uncover how these advances are not merely theoretical but are being applied today to enhance our interaction with the digital world. Discover the intricacies of how we can harness neuromuscular signals to control and communicate with devices applied across many domains.
