The Importance of the Human Brain in Ancient Egypt
Sofia Aziz
(Biomedical Egypotologist, Author, Broadcaster )
Biomedical investigative techniques are gradually changing our understanding of mummification methods. Sofia’s research refutes long held claims that the brain was of no relevance to the ancient Egyptians. She will discuss how CT imaging, the medical papyri and archaeological records provide a wider understanding of ancient Egyptian medicine and the importance of the human brain in the afterlife.
How to Replace A Broken Heart?
Paul Exton
(Lead ECMO Perfusionist)
How do you replace a broken heart? Unfortunately, this isn’t about love songs, but a talk on the work done in cardiothoracic surgery. I have worked as a Perfusionist for over 20 years and have been involved in the treatment of patients with heart and lung failure as well as the evolution of devices used to support and replace these organs. In this talk I hope to share the work we do, explain how a failing heart or lung can be supported, highlight the incredible technology used, and shine a light on a world that is working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, changing, extending and saving lives.
