Music is everywhere. Whether you’re in the car with the radio on, walking through the streets with headphones in, or a touring musician, music is part of our everyday lives. But, how does our brain receive and process music? And how can music benefit our mental health? In this event, Dr Liz Coombes and Sarah Miles (With Music in Mind) explore how the brain impacts out mood, motivation and memory, and how music is being used as a therapy for patients with dementia.

We will also have a guest acoustic performance from Nashville singer songwriter Connor Christian.

The Power of the Playlist: how intentional use of music we listen to impacts our mental health.

Dr Liz Coombes (HCPC registered music therapist, senior lecturer in music therapy and researcher at the University of South Wales)
I'll be exploring how music is received and processed in the brain, and then looking more broadly at what this might mean for us in our daily lives. There is good evidence to suggest that listening to certain types of music can impact mood, motivation and memory. How does this work and why might we want to tap into these processes for ourselves and others?

With Music In Mind

With Music In Mind CIC was formed on the foundation of strong evidence about the benefits that music, singing and specifically group singing can bring. With an ageing population in the Vale of Glamorgan, and evidence of increasing loneliness and social isolation, the organisation set out to make a difference to older people by offering a service. We ran our first singing and social group in September 2015 in the market town of Cowbridge, and now we run six groups (four singing and two gentle exercise). Join us to discuss how we're trying to tackle loneliness using music!

Live Acoustic Performance from Nashville singer-songwriter Connor Christian.

Connor Christian (Musician)
As an artist, Connor Christian has achieved much critical acclaim and commercial success including Billboard naming The Southern Gothic as its "Band on the Verge", a #1 on Billboard's Heartseeker chart, and #1 on CMT's 12-Pack Countdown.

Connor has also shared the stage with the likes of Willie Nelson, ZZ Top, Uncle Kracker, Styx, and Zac Brown Band, and have released music with legendary acts such as Old Crow Medicine's frontman Ketch Secor on the single 'Up On Your Love'.

This date will be part of a full tour, and he will be back in Cardiff on 31st May.
