Wanting to feel happy and secure are two basic and fundamental states we as humans aim for. But what is happiness and how do the bonds we make with others when young affect us throughout our lives? Tonight Dr Juhl and Dr Newman-Taylor discuss their thoughts on these points.

Unfortunately, for health reasons Dr Jacob Juhl and Dr Kurt Sylvan are no longer aim to join us for this event. However, we are delighted to announce that Dr Paul Conway will instead be joining us for the evening. Please see below for further information on his exciting new talk.

Is feeling safe the antidote to paranoia? The role of 'attachment security' in psychosis

Dr Katherine Newman-Taylor (Dr Katherine Newman-Taylor is Programme Director for the PG Diploma and PG Certificate in CBT (Advanced Level Practice) at the University of Southampton. )
The bonds we form in early life shape our beliefs, our ability to manage our feelings, and our relationships into adulthood. People who are 'securely attached' are less vulnerable to mental health problems. In our research, we have been inducing a sense of 'felt security in people with paranoia and testing the impact on their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. We've found that helping people to feel safe reduces paranoia and linked anxiety.

Moral Compass: how doctors and the public view medical sacrifices during the COVID-19 pandemic

Dr Paul Conway (Senior Lecturer, Psychology)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors have faced difficult sacrificial trade-offs regarding who to give medical care to. In this talk, we discover how doctors and the public think about such decisions. We will discover studies where real doctors made sacrificial decisions and explained their choices, and where the public rated doctors based on their decisions and explanations. What decisions and explanations promote trust? Results shed light on medical decisions and the moral questions we ask ourselves everyday.
