Join Pint of Science Darlington for an evening learning about new healthcare technologies that the researchers at Teesside University are working on. Exploring technologies that work in the nano and micro range, such as gene therapies, bioprinting and microneedles, these futuristic concepts might just be the next big thing in revolutionising healthcare.
Combining electronics and biology: Can we engineer our biology?
Dr Craig McBeth
(Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences)
Biotechnology is ever developing and improving our diagnostic and therapeutic landscape; however, we can only achieve so much following conventional methods and trends. Cyborgs have long been prevalent in science fiction along with some amazingly cool technology that can, for example, print replacement body parts; but are we any closer to this becoming a reality? In this talk, we will explore the evolving world of bioprinting and bioelectronics, and see how an unconventional sci-fi approach can offer us technologies only seen in movies.

A Gene-ius Approach to Beating Cancer: Tailored, Targeted, and True!
Dr Sreejith Raveendran
(Senior Lecturer in Biotechnology)
Your DNA vs. Cancer: The Ultimate Face-Off! What if we told you your DNA could help beat cancer? Sounds cool, right? Join us as we dive into how gene and cell therapies are turning cancer treatments into a personal, targeted experience that fights the disease in the smartest way possible. The future of cancer care is here, and it's all about YOU!

Tiny needles, big impact: introducing microneedles for medicine
Dr Fiona Smith
(Lecturer in Pharmacy)
Needle phobia continues to be a considerable barrier for the delivery of medicines via injection, indeed even those who do not suffer from a phobia tend to find injections unpleasant at best! Microneedles, which can be thought of as tiny needles, have become commonplace within the cosmetic sector. Could they be harnessed for the painless delivery of medicines too? Join me to discuss the idea of using microneedles for medicines delivery, highlighting early and notable research in the field, what current research is focussing on and exploring what the future holds for the use of microneedles in medicine.
