How good of a job are our workplaces doing at protecting us from sexual harassment and other forms of misbehaviour?
Are we increasingly expected to perform emotional work on top of our regular workloads ?
Join us for a fascinating evening as our two speakers, Dr Jaswinder Blackwell-Pal and Prof Lizzie Barmes, explore these important questions through the lenses of theatre studies and labour law. Hear them shine a light on some of the hidden struggles faced by modern-day workers and the systems at play behind those.

Serving the self: performance in the workplace

'Serving the self: performance in the workplace' - how can the idea of emotional labour be used to help us understand the increasing expectation to 'perform' at work?
Silencing at Work: Sexual Harassment, Workplace Misconduct and NDAs
Prof Lizzie Barmes
(Professor of Labour Law)
Working people in the UK have many rights that protect them from sexual harassment and other forms of misconduct at work, and yet this behaviour is commonplace. A significant part of the reason why is that people who complain or sue about misbehaviour at work are frequently silenced by non-disclosure agreements in settlements of their claims. This has the worrying consequences that the individuals responsible for sexual and harassing behaviour are not held accountable, larger structural forces that produce misconduct at work go unaddressed and people learn to keep quiet about troubles at work
